When We Are Closed - 2024

Please think carefully before seeking medical advice when the Surgery is closed and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Medical advice can be obtained by visiting either www.nhsinform.scot or downloading the NHS24 app to your phone or tablet using the links here .

EMERGENCIES: In a genuine emergency you should call 999. Ambulance control will then activate the emergency services response. If an emergency services response is not required the call handlers are trained to recognise this and will redirect you to the most appropriate service.

Urgent cases [Evenings and Weekends]: NHS24 is responsible for the initial processing of urgent cases when GP Surgeries throughout Scotland are closed. They operate from 6pm each evening to 8am the following morning Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and on Public Holidays such as Good Friday, Easter Monday or Christmas. NHS24 will always know which Doctor is on call and will forward cases on as appropriate. This may be to the resident GP on Jura or the locum Out-of-Hours GP.

Weekday afternoons: The Surgery on Jura is unusual compared with mainland Surgeries in that it is closes each weekday afternoon at 1pm. NHS24 do not open for calls until 6pm. If urgent medical advice is required between the hours of 1pm - 6pm Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays), please phone the usual Surgery number (01496 820218) to be connected to the on-call Doctor.

There is also an A&E department at Islay Hospital in Bowmore which is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This is accessible, without prior referral, to all residents of Islay and Jura.

Key Messages: If you are not sure who to phone, but recognise that urgent assistance is required: ring 999.

If you are confident that an emergency response is not required, but are not sure which number to use: ring 111.

If NHS24 is not open for calls you will hear a message advising you to contact your own Surgery. If you know the Surgery is not open, but still need medical advice: ring 01496 820218. Non-urgent messages can also be left by ringing this number.
